The Engineering materials module consists of four learning resources which should be completed in sequence,
- Materials in engineering
- Physical and mechanical properties
- Innovations and modern materials
- Smart materials
Each resource includes the following:
- Practitioner resource slides including detailed delivery notes and additional suggestions
- Learner versions of the resource slides without delivery notes
- Printable activity sheets to support the written activities within the resource
Use the 'Download all files' option at the bottom of this page to save all the resources on this page.
1. Materials in engineering
This Level 2 resource defines engineering materials and explores how engineers relate the properties of materials to their purpose. The resource introduces some key areas that later resources develop and, importantly, gauges any prior understanding.
2. Physical and mechanical properties
This Level 3 resource introduces material classifications and their physical and mechanical properties. Definitions of key properties are introduced and learners get to consider how engineering controls, administrative controls and PPE can help to mitigate hazards from materials and their processing.
3. Innovation and modern materials
This Level 3 resource explores the evolution of composite materials and examines the drivers for innovation in materials design.
4. Smart materials
This Level 3 resource explores the topic of "smart" materials, their characteristics and their range of applications. It considers sustainability factors and how smart materials could transform manufacturing for the Industry 4.0 era.
