Meet the Awardees

Abishan has passion for engineering and logic-oriented mindset that stems from his childhood, in which he watched his dad take apart and reassemble cars and bikes. He aims to follow in his footsteps at a much larger scale - focusing on sustainable development. He understands the privilege of being awarded this scholarship.

Des is passionate about protecting the environment and aims to use her cybersecurity studies to explore how technology can support sustainable engineering. Her goal is to develop solutions that make emerging technologies not only safer, but also more efficient and environmentally responsible.

From childhood José enjoyed building structures, he used to try to rebuild monuments, e.g. Eiffel Tower with Lego. He wants to learn more about structures and sustainability so that he can participate in, and oversee a mega project that is sustainable and breathtaking.

Momin has loved mathematics and wanted to apply it in a creative way that led him to Computer Science, which challenges him to think logically. He is fascinated by how technology and AI can make cities smarter. He enjoys boxing, volunteering, and learning about cars and new tech.

William is an aspiring aerospace engineer tackling UN Goal 13 by pursuing a MEng in Manufacturing Engineering. He is a hands-on innovator, and helped to build a competitive Greenpower electric racer, thus winning the Birmingham Airport Monorail Challenge.

Zyiad developed a strong interest in automotive engineering and sustainable transport systems - inspired by the precision, and innovation of Formula 1. He aims to contribute to the development of efficient and environmentally friendly responsible vehicles.

Before starting university, Daniel had already taken courses in popular programming languages and learnt about data structures and algorithms. He hopes to one day be able to work at the forefront of technology within AI and machine learning, and work on innovative projects that effect all our lives in a positive way.

Omar’s passion for the automotive industry stems from his childhood, where he enjoyed playing with and disassembling toy cars in order to study the intricate parts inside. He has already undertaken a number of internships and hopes to work in sustainability and EVs in the future.

At college, Mohammed completed placements at the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering and Global Nano Network which sparked an interest in digital twins and the advanced manufacturing process. He wants to have further, diverse experiences which will make a positive impact.

Pravanan was fascinated by the molecular makeup of materials which drew him to chemical engineering. He wants to explore how atomic structures share large scale processes. He has since attended numerous chemical engineering workshops and talks, which have reinforced a passion for innovation.

Interactions with architecture companies during sixth form led Natasha to discover civil engineering. At university, she hopes to broaden her knowledge on sustainable building design and infrastructure, and to make a positive impact on the way we live through engineering.

Having moved house frequently as a child, Ecaterina has been drawn to architecture and construction, and dreams of building her own home. The bursary will connect with other engineering professionals, to help her find work with an international architecture firm.

Saara’s passion for physics, maths and “building things” led her to complete Pathways to Engineering and an internship at WMG, working on the Coventry Light Rail project. Studying general engineering will give her a broad understanding before deciding where to specialise.

After a tour of Meggitt gave him an insight into the world of engineering, Wafiq became fascinated by aircraft and the aerospace industry as a whole. He is eager to start applying everything he learns at university to real-world problems.

Jamie chose mechanical engineering in order to better understand how things around us work, so that he can innovate and make the world a better place. The bursary will allow him to fund his own projects whilst completing his degree at the University of Plymouth.

Kelly says an artistic upbringing inspired her to complete A Levels in product design, maths and physics – subjects she says fuelled her creativity. She hopes to be able to work on projects that tackle global challenges, such as access to clean water. In her space time she produces art.

From a young age Casey has been curious about how things work and come together. He has decided to go into civil engineering after seeing the HS2 work in his local area and aspiring to be a part of a similar large-scale project.

Faith-Brian wants to have a big impact on the world through engineering and was drawn to it because the world around us relies on engineers. He hopes to one day have his own mechanical engineering firm.

Louie says his school maths teacher, a former mechanical engineer, was hugely influential in helping him better understand engineering careers. He is keen to give back and in turn inspire future generations into engineering.

Taking part in school STEM club and working on projects such as building a Bluetooth speaker developed Aboulashif’s interest in engineering. The bursary will help with a lot of the costs associated with going to university.

Poya studied both manufacturing and aerospace engineering for four years at college, and decided to pursue aerospace for his degree. Receiving the bursary will mean he no longer has to work part-time throughout his studies.

Studying Design Technology in Year 9 sparked Gurmandar’s interest in engineering. In his free time he repairs broken mobile phones and sells them on, and enjoys making models of movie props using CAD.

Dylendra enjoys the opportunity to be hands-on when it comes to engineering. He completed the Industrial Cadets Gold programme at sixth form, looking at sustainable workplace environments, alongside A Levels in maths, physics and chemistry.

For Rahul, engineering is about being able to create and innovate. He wants to work on a large project that can have major impact. The bursary will give him the opportunity to visit engineering sites around the world, where he can learn directly from the people that work on them.

Having completed a BTEC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Dawud has recently taken the next step towards his goal of becoming a chartered electrical engineer, by beginning a degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Birmingham.

Mohammed says attending taster aerospace engineering lectures at university and lectures from the Royal Aeronautical Society helped him to determine his career path, and made feel fully informed about his choices for further study.

Jamila completed BTEC Extended Certificates in Applied Science, Business and IT at sixth form. After completing a work experience programme which had an engineering focus, she made up her mind to become an electronic engineer.

Iqra credits her Year 11 physics teacher at Sidney Stringer Academy with her decision to study engineering, who she says was passionate and taught her about the real-life application of physics.

Afras says he has always been fascinated by the amazing feats achieved by the aerospace industry such as the Apollo program, where humans landed on the moon, or the work of the Wright Brothers who came up with practical solutions after many tests and trials.

Despite originally planning to join the RAF, James instead completed a BTEC in Aeronautical Engineering at Solihull College & University Centre, where he is now completing a degree in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.

From a young age, Abdulhakim had always looked for ways to make things more practical, including a project where he designed a mixer tap using only a 2-litre plastic bottle.

Farid enjoyed engineering at school as it was very practical and hands on in comparison to other subjects and it allowed him to develop his problem solving and creativity skills.

Jess chose this career path when looking into sixth form study at WMG Academy for Young Engineers, Solihull, which was actively promoting opportunities available to females in the engineering industry.

Saman has always wanted to pursue a career in engineering and obtained an EPQ during sixth form for research on “ethical geo-engineering solutions” for carbon dioxide removal from the Earth’s atmosphere.
