The challenge
Critical infrastructure systems – such as electricity grids, water networks, and healthcare systems – are undergoing a massive transformation driven by the Internet of Things and AI. This convergence of IT and operational technology brings exciting opportunities to use data for real-time monitoring, distributed control, and autonomous optimisation to make systems more efficient and sustainable. However, can AI be reliably deployed for the control of safety-critical systems? What happens if the information AI uses is not accurate? Even worse, what if attackers intentionally modify the data acquired by the AI in real time, modifying the system's behaviour without being detected and causing catastrophic physical, economic, or societal harm? Attacks specifically targeting AI-driven control applications have not been sufficiently investigated, despite their potentially severe consequences. Developing frameworks to guarantee the safety and reliability of these interconnected architectures is an imperative.
The research
The project investigates how AI-enabled control architectures can be a source of cyber-physical vulnerability for critical infrastructures. The goal of the project is to identify these vulnerabilities, assess their potential impact on critical infrastructure operations and propose new control methodologies that guarantee safety, reliability and resilience of these systems.
This vital and timely research will also inform industrial stakeholders and policymakers, so that modern critical infrastructures can fully take advantage of the new opportunities coming from AI and IoT technologies, while guaranteeing a secure and resilient future for our societies.
The researcher
Dr Boem is Associate Professor in Control Systems at UCL and Honorary Lecturer with Imperial College. She is Associate Editor for the IEEE CSS Letters and the European Journal of Control. She is a member of the Executive Boards of the EPSRC ACE Network and of the IFAC UKACC, as well as a member of the IFAC Technical Committees 6.4 Safeprocess and 1.5 Networked Systems. She was awarded the Imperial College Research Fellowship, and she is a recipient of the EPSRC New Investigator Award. Her research interests include the design of fault detection and fault-tolerant optimal control methods for large-scale interconnected systems, safety and security of cyber-physical systems, and reliability of learning-based control. She has been working on several interdisciplinary projects, with applications spanning from power and energy systems, water networks, to healthcare applications.
