As part of its work on global responsibility, The Academy commissions research and undertakes surveys to measure and map progress.
Ethical practice
One of the actions in Engineering Ethics: Maintaining society’s trust in the engineering profession is “To produce an Audit and Evaluation report on the state of engineering ethics which includes ways to measure the profession’s performance against the Vision”. The Royal Academy of Engineering has commissioned GoodCorporation to do this with an anticipated launch in the Spring of 2023.
The audit included a set of online surveys aimed at understanding the extent to which ethical practices and ethical culture are embedded across UK engineering. These surveys were open to:
- UK engineers and technicians
- Companies in engineering
- Professional bodies
Further research was conducted through interviews with engineering firms and professional bodies to delve into their experience of ethics in engineering and identify areas of good practice.
The Ethics in the engineering profession report was published in June 2023.
