The inaugural Black History Month Leadership Lunch will celebrate this year's theme Celebrating our Sisters in partnership with AFBE-UK. Drawing this together with the Academy's focus on Engineering Inclusive Cultures, this lunch will explore the entrepreneurial spirit and leadership qualities required for success in engineering and how intersectionality raises unique challenges and opportunities in this space.
Prior to the lunch, Dr Nike Folayan MBE HonFREng, Technical Director at WSP and Chair and Co-Founder of the Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers UK (AFBE-UK), will be joined by Yewande Akinola MBE HonFREng, Engineering Designer and Innovator, and together they will their insights and experiences on this topic, framing the futher discussions during lunch.

Dr Nike Folayan MBE HonFREng
Dr Nike Folayan MBE is chartered electronics engineer with a doctorate in electronics engineering. She is a Fellow of the IET. Nike is currently Technical Director and the Technical Discipline Leader for Communications and Control at WSP. She is also a technical blogger on SMART technology systems. Nike is Chair and Co-Founder of AFBE-UK, a not-for-profit organisation that promotes higher achievements in education and engineering, particularly among people from Black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds. Formed in 2007, AFBE-UK has over 20,000 beneficiaries, a UK-wide membership of over 2500, and over 65 corporate members from a wide range of engineering organisations.

Yewande Akinola MBE HonFREng
Yewande is a chartered Engineer, Innovator and Speaker. Her engineering experience includes the design and construction, innovation and manufacture of buildings and systems in the built environment. She has worked on projects in the UK, Africa, the Middle East and East Asia and has been named the UK Young Woman Engineer of the Year by the Institution of Engineering & Technology. She has also been awarded the Exceptional Achiever Award from the Association for BAME Engineers and the Association of Consultancy and Engineering, U.K. (ACE). She is a Visiting Professor at the University of Westminster. She is passionate about STEM communication and has presented Engineering programmes for Television. In the 2020 New Year Honours list, Yewande was awarded an MBE for services to engineering innovation and diversity in STEM. She has served as the UK's Innovation Agency (Innovate UK) Ambassador for Clean Growth and Infrastructure and was recently awarded Top 50 Workplace leaders in the UK. Yewande was recently appointed as Vice President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and serves as Chair of the Institution's Knowledge Services & Solutions (KS&S) board. She sits on the Global Advisory Board of Warwick Business School.
