Video transcript: Short-term benefits
I think the short term benefits to holding an injury placement would be to fill any immediate skills gaps but I'm looking more at the long term I think that a pipeline of talent of t- level Learners is going to be fantastic for engineering and manufacturer in general here at HF Bond we are primarily a sheet metal contractor working in utilities but we'll take our hand to pretty much any metal work that's required we're based in kenton which is a small village in suffolk a lot of people don't know we are here but it's a beautiful place to work there's been a very widely publicized skills Gap in engineering and Manufacturing trying to recruit has been a difficulty so looking at other ways to get people into the industry is vital for us originally I was looking to take on an apprentice I was finding that quite difficult then it was mentioned about t levels which is something I knew nothing about new Anglia careers Hub put me on to suff new College I went down and met load of T level Learners it's kind of like a speed dating situation where each learner would come to a different employer and have a bit of a chat like an interview I found Maliki that way well first of all he send over a covering letter and a CV like it would be in the real world I like the way he put everything forward so I invited him in we had an interview it's turned out to be fantastic and haven't look back since my name is Malachi and I'm a t level learner here I've learned how to operate the laser machine at the Press break there's one manual one and one automotive one using a bit of Cad and then I've learned how to weld when it came to setting up the process of taking on a t level student getting a list of requirements for their course was quite straightforward and I was covering what they already wanted so yeah we're really happy that's a smooth process we spoke to our insurance company for somebody that's under 18 working here we did a risk assessment and they were totally happy that covered at any needs and there was no issue whatsoever I'd rather have somebody young and enthusiastic about the industry that wants to come in and Forge a career in engineering and Manufacturing I believe T levels can help me to challenge the skill shortage by plugging the gaps initially in the short term and they gain all the experience that they need on the job training as well as their studies in the college they can then consider yeah this is a career for me and Forge the path forward the benefit I've definitely learned from this is I know what it's like to come into a workplace and have expectations of me in the future I'd like to get in a degree level apprenticeship I would totally recommend t-level industry placements to all businesses speak to your local College local provider take on a t-lev student they're going to be the great talent pipeline for the future that's my belief that's what I'm seeing at the moment please consider taking on a student they're amazing
Video transcript: Addressing skills gaps
[Music] HYDRAM a sheet metal subcontracting firm uh we manufacture products for a range of customers across the UK having the T level placements on site for a length of time is valuable for both us and them they already know how the Equipment Works they're not coming into a job in the future having to relearn that they've been able to gain that experience in a practical manner I feel the impact of having t-lev students on site is giving them the opportunity to experience industry it gives them chance to make an informed choice about their future and it gives them that career guidance to reflect upon that our T level placements are following a similar pattern to our apprentices who rotate through every section in the business it gives them a very rounded exposure to the industry but it also lets our teams individually see whether that person is right or not for that role from an employee perspective T levels are a valuable qualification it acts as a stepping St between college and coming into employment provides valuable work skills it gives the young person incredible insight to work ethic and the world of work which from our side is incredibly important [Music]
Video transcript: A pipeline of talent
Don't be put off by barriers or misconceptions around tea levels as long as your procedures your machines have got the correct guarding you've got your risk assessments there's absolutely nothing to fear the reason we offer placement for T Lev Learners is because we're creating a pipeline of talent recruitment is tough this takes one of the concerns away we looked at the skills that we required we want it to be the spoke for Hepco and that's exactly what it is T- Level Learners could go on to a level three apprenticeship a level four apprenticeship and also they may choose to fill some roles which are are vacant in our operator section so our students come in on Tuesdays and Thursdays they rotate through a number of departments our CNC Department our large ring cell Department our projects department where they learn more manual skills as in turning and Milling they also go into our grinding shop they go into our assembly shop and also our quality and inspection department so they get a well-rounded training and a good foundation of learning what we're seeing now is that our apprentices will show our T level students how to do things and uh while they're doing that they're reflecting on their own practice by ask asking themselves the question am I explaining this in the right way I know that there are some concerns in different companies you know with health and safety 80% of our our machines are are CNC but we've not found it an issue at all we have our own processes our procedures risk assessments on each machine really we don't we don't treat them any differently to first year apprentices the challenges that we faced weren't with Exeter College they were actually with our stakeholders here at Hepco motion they were concerned that we were going to take employees away from manufacturing roles and we would lose time and it would affect our customer service this was very much not the case as we engaged our trained mentors with our T-Level students we realized that our mentors were actually enjoying what they were doing it was enriching their day jobs we were getting good feedback on our Learners and as we became better at it we saw some real improvements in staff morale and the staff were very keen once they saw the impressive results these students are very capable they're going to become apprentices and they are going to be able to hit the gr running the short-term benefits to the business are that these students come in and they make a real contribution to production the t-level Learners make me proud every day in a very short period of time they are doing really good work they listen they surprise me you know to think that they've probably got another 2 years years before they become an apprentice and they're already running machines I I I think is phenomenal really I think that other companies need to get involved with tea levels for me it's a complete no-brainer
