Reasonable adjustments
The Academy is committed to creating inclusive and accessible services, ensuring that people can access and participate in our programmes, grants, awards, events and other services. If you experience barriers to participation, we encourage you to contact us to discuss adjustments or support. This webpage has details of who can ask for support and how to make a request.
What are reasonable adjustments?
Reasonable adjustments are changes made to remove or reduce barriers experienced by disabled people and people with long-term health conditions. Adjustments are intended to help people access our services on an equal basis.
Examples of adjustments
Adjustments can include changes to the physical environment including sensory changes, alternative means of communication, providing additional support, or modifying some requirements.
Adjustments you can ask for include (but are not limited to):
-
Providing detailed instructions on how to get to a venue
-
Covering the cost of a support worker or assistance animal
-
Providing materials in another format
-
Deadline extension
-
Assistive technology e.g. speech-to-text software
-
Access to charging points
-
Flexibility on meeting location
-
Providing a reserved seat
All adjustments are tailored to individual circumstances and needs and are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Who can request an adjustment?
Anyone who experiences barriers to participating in our programmes, grants, awards, events or services can contact us to discuss possible adjustments or support.
We have a legal duty to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people and people with long-term health conditions. We also seek to remove barriers wherever it is reasonable to do and with a view to fairness and consistency.
How to request an adjustment
You can request an adjustment at any stage of an application, or when participating in any of our activities.
Where possible, please submit your request at least 10 working days before a submission deadline, event or activity so that we have time to explore support options.
Please include in your request:
-
What scheme, event or activity you are participating in
-
Your involvement with the Academy (for example if you are an applicant, awardee or Fellow)
-
What barriers you are experiencing and how they impact your ability to participate
-
Any adjustments you feel may help (if known)
-
Your contact details
Send your request to the relevant programme or event lead using the details provided on the relevant web page, application guidance, event invitation or communication. If you are unsure of who to contact, use our contact form.
When responding to your request, we may ask about the barriers you are experiencing and any adjustments that may help. Our focus is on understanding how we can support your participation, rather than on your disability or health condition.
Confidentiality
Any information you share with us will be treated confidentially and in line with GDPR principles. Information will only be shared with individuals to help inform decisions or to implement adjustments, and we will seek your consent where appropriate.
