UK-China decarbonisation partnership
Our partnership on decarbonisation with the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) is enabling joint learning on how engineering can help achieve national net zero targets and exploring opportunities for research and innovation collaboration in key technology areas.
This partnership is overseen by the Sino-British Engineering Technology Cooperation Steering Committee, which is co-chaired by Academy President Professor Sir Jim McDonald FRSE FREng and met for the first time on 27 April 2022. The partnership has delivered the following activities:
First high-level policy exchange, April 2021: This exchange brought together Fellows and experts convened by the two academies to explore each nation’s decarbonisation goals and associated research and innovation priorities.
Second high-level policy exchange, December 2021:
This second exchange brought together Fellows, experts and government officials to explore UK-China collaboration opportunities in in more detail, including in specific technical areas and on how to take engineering systems approach to decarbonisation policy challenges.
UK-China decarbonisation technology workshops, 2022-23: This series of workshops is bringing together researchers and innovators to identify UK-China collaboration opportunities in key technology areas including offshore wind, low-carbon construction and carbon capture, utilisation and storage.
UK-South Korea partnership on the future grid
We’re working with the National Academy of Engineering Korea (NAEK) to foster UK-South Korea learning and collaboration on the future electricity grid.
In December 2021, we held the first UK-South Korea Innovation Forum on ICT Solutions for the Future Grid, which brought together Fellows and national experts to discuss technology progress and innovation, and governance for the future grid.
In June 2022, we held deep-dive policy exchanges on two key topics: energy digitalisation and grid regulation. These exchanges have enabled joint learning and network building, and have identified opportunities for further UK-South Korea collaboration.
We’re working with NAEK to develop further activities under this partnership.
UK-US-China trilateral partnership
We work in partnership with the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE) on the Global Grand Challenges Summit (GGCS) series. Since 2013, the series has aimed to accelerate international engineering collaboration to address global challenges.
We hosted the 2019 summit in London, which convened inspirational world leaders with the next generation of engineers and changemakers to build creative collaborations and solve the grand challenges facing humanity.
