Alex van Someren is an engineer who has made substantial contributions to the UK computing industry, computing education and the commercial use of cryptography. He demonstrated world-class entrepreneurship and leadership in creating and growing multiple engineering-based businesses including ANT plc and nCipher plc, which he co-founded and led to successful flotation and sale. Other notable contributions include to development of the BBC Microcomputer and Acorn Electron, leading the development of the award-winning ANT Internet Suite, and pioneering documentation of Arm RISC microprocessors. At Amadeus Capital Partners he managed the growth of several investment portfolios of UK engineering and technology companies. In 2021, he was appointed UK Chief Scientific Adviser for National Security.
