Robots have great potential to help rescuers locate and assist people trapped in collapsed buildings, or space explorers to map an unknown planet. Conventional "hard" robots can get stuck navigating complex and unknown environments. Soft robots, in contrast, can move without getting stuck because they cam bend, twist, and deform around objects. They can also move by unconventional methods such as rolling and jumping. This project will explore how to make a novel jumping and rolling soft robot that can move autonomously and efficiently over a wide range of rough surfaces and jump over obstacles.
