About the Toolkit
The following toolkit was developed to equip all parties with the tools to plan and deliver high quality industry placements. The aim of this toolkit is to serve as a concise and comprehensive resource hub for engineering and manufacturing specific support.
This toolkit has been developed in collaboration with the engineering and manufacturing sector and relevant T Level stakeholders. The Department for Education (DfE) is responsible for the industry placement component of the T Level. They have produced several useful resources and have also commissioned other organisations to produce resources. Aspects of the following toolkit references work from the DfE as well as other organisations.
What is an industry placement?
Every T Level learner is required to complete an industry placement of a minimum of 45 days (315 hours) with an employer. Industry placements provide a valuable opportunity for learners to develop practical and technical skills and make a meaningful contribution to an organisation.
Industry placements differ from typical work experience where a learner spends a week or two in a workplace with the aim of gaining a sense of the world of work. Industry placements, on the other hand, are much longer and must be well planned and clearly structured to ensure that the learner has appropriate opportunities to learn and apply pre-defined knowledge, skills, and behaviours as well as add value to the host employer. Industry placements must be completed with an employer in an industry relevant to a student’s T Level study programme.
