UK-Germany partnership
UK-Germany Energy Systems Symposium
Accelerating net zero through policy-research collaboration
We delivered this online symposium on 19-23 October 2020 in partnership with Germany’s National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech).
The symposium brought together 60 engineers, scientists, policymakers, and energy professionals from the two nations to foster UK-Germany exchange on how to deliver the energy transition. Discussions explored priority policy issues faced by each country and opportunities for UK-Germany research partnership to develop technological solutions.

UK-Germany collaborative projects on energy transition
The symposium held in October 2020 launched ten collaborative research partnerships, each conducting a twelve-month project focused on an aspect of the energy transition.
Supported by funding from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, each project features a newly formed UK-Germany coalition that seeks to address a specific transition challenge common to both countries, including energy storage, approaches to public interaction, the use of peatlands for carbon sequestration and decarbonising urban freight transport.
