Peter Dearman is renowned for his leadership of railway electrification and system safety for the UK rail network and is regarded by many peers as the leading rail electrical and mechanical engineer of his generation. His reputation has led to his advice being sought internationally. His principal achievements include responsibility for the development and implementation of the train protection warning system, which has reduced the risk of signals passed at danger by 80%.

He has also led railway electrification since East Coast Main Line electrification in the 1980s to deliver increasingly optimised electrification that will support the railway industry's decarbonisation strategy.
