Research Fellowships 2022
Dr Yijing Xie aims to develop a 3D optical imaging system to help neurosurgeons to see brain functions during surgery. Currently there is a lack of effective ways to assess brain functions in real time during brain surgery. Dr Xie is looking into multispectral imaging which shows promise in gauging biological tissue’s physiological status. However, the current 2D implementation of multispectral imaging is insufficient to reliably analyse deep-lying tissues or tissue with sharp edges. She will develop a light field enabled 3D functional multispectral imaging system that can measure 3D surface profile, pathological, and physiological status of the brain tissue in real time. The technology will be highly targeted and will also be scalable and transferable to benefit many other research fields presenting similar challenges, within and beyond biomedical research.
