Thermal barrier coatings have been applied to metallic substrate as engine components to protect the underline metal substrates from combustion environments and lead to longer life of the components. Environmental barrier coatings are being developed to apply to ceramic matric composites to protect the composite from steam environment in aero engines. Application of both coatings leads to increase of engine operation temperature, higher efficiency and less pollution of aero-engines. Our current research has been focused on 1) to understand chemical attack mechanisms to thermal barrier coatings at high temperature 2) to develop new coating technology to produce uniform coatings on complex shape substrates, which is not available now; 3) to understand properties and performance of coatings in aero-engine environments.
