Programme overview
This is Engineering: Schools - West Midlands is the continuation of the former Lord Bhattacharyya Engineering Education Programme which was launched by the Academy in 2020.
We have brought together a network of 27 schools and colleges, linked to employers, universities, and other stakeholders across the region to create a sustainable programme. We are enhancing and enriching the STEM curriculum and raising students' skills levels by providing links to real-world engineering. This raises their aspirations and develops their knowledge of engineering careers and the pathways into them. We are working hard to encourage more young people, particularly those from under-represented groups, to progress into engineering and technician roles in this exciting industry.
What we offer
- A lead school coordinator in each cluster of schools, who facilitates network meetings and fosters partnerships between schools/colleges and local employers
- An in-house grant scheme for participating schools and colleges, which allows them to purchase resources, deliver curriculum-enhancing experiences, and access CPD and other training opportunities
- CPD that responds to teachers' needs, plus free engineering-themed STEM teaching and learning resources developed by the Academy, which enhance and add context to the curriculum
- Greater employer engagement opportunities which improve perceptions of engineering careers, as well as boosting knowledge of pathways into engineering and technician careers.
Delivering STEM education support
We are pleased to have established a regional programme that delivers engineering-focused STEM education support for both students and their teachers. The West Midlands has a long and proud heritage of engineering, so by enabling students’ progression into further and higher education, we aim to build a skills base that can contribute to the engineering profession’s future needs, both locally and nationally.
