The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) aims to provide a competitive environment to bridge the gap between university-based research and the development of innovative manufacturing solutions, in line with the Government’s manufacturing strategy. The MTC is part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, supported by Innovate UK.
ILP graduates from MTC worked together to benchmark company practices against actions laid out in the Inclusivity in Innovation Charter. This was to ensure MTC are implementing effective practices in day-to-day operations and to empower leaders who nurture safe, inclusive environments, and embed equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in company culture at all levels.

The MTC team included:
- Matt Thomas, Mid-career leader (Project Lead)
- Gurpreet Ghataore, Early-career leader
- Helen Butterworth, HR Leader
- Vicki Sanderson, Senior-career leader

Matt Thomas, Chief Engineer, Mid-career Leader (Project Lead)
“This programme has helped me develop the awareness to be more considerate, more articulate when addressing issues and more confident to call out micro-aggressions or raise objections to bias experienced at work.
As an inclusive leader at my workplace, I speak out, challenge and encourage others to do the same.
I’d encourage engineers to recognise the value of diversity in innovation and problem solving, embrace the breadth of perspective and challenge any bias.”
Helen Butterworth, Head of People Experience, HR Leader
I am proud to have collaborated in a programme that will contribute and support inclusivity across engineering and innovation.
In my workplace, as an inclusive leader, I aim to be open, available and fair. In the future, I’d like to see the engineering industry be recognised as a fully diverse and inclusive sector.
