Kamata is hardware and software solution against electricity theft, enabling commercial loss reduction, increased energy access and affordability in Africa. Kamata solution is a hardware and software product, using IT & OT (Information Technology & Operational Technology), IoT (Internet of Things) and AI (Artificial Intelligence) to actively do remote monitoring of electricity use, identify and report cases of power theft and illegal use in real time.

The hardware device is installed at electricity distribution points and is remotely monitored via a cloud based software. The device detects any cases of unauthorized and/or illegal electricity use, instantly cuts off power from the suspect and reports the case in real time to the utility's control centre, including name of the power user, location and GPS coordinates, time of power theft attempt, among others.

When the issue has been resolved and probably a fine paid, power can be switched back remotely with no need for a physical site visit. The Kamata solution is unique because it is able to identify and report particular power theft methods such as meter bypass and identifying faulty slowed down meters, which no other metering technology, apart from Kamata, is able to detect yet globally. The technology was awarded a patent due to this unique invention, and is compatible with all meter types and versions ranging from analogue to smart meters.
