Jack Oyugi (Kenya) - CEO & Founder Oviponics
In the interest of feeding the world sustainably using climate-resilient and smart farming technology, we introduce Oviponics, a new concept for producing clean protein from the Lake Victoria Nyanza barbs (Enteromius nyanzae), a species of cyprinid fish.
Oviponics is derived from the words "oviparous" and "ponics," which mean "farming systems not produced in the earth's outermost crust." Oviponics focuses on producing clean fish-based protein in two weeks by studying and cultivating Nyanza barbs in a control system. Omena, a clean protein, scalable, consumer-acceptable, sustainable, and safe food for both humans and animals, is an oviponics product. Omena protein contains a high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids, minerals, and nutrients, all of which promote rapid growth in animals and help to prevent retardation and malnutrition. Omena's small size makes it very easy to dry, store, and transport. Omena's light weight makes it very adaptable and cost-effective for customers.
Oviponics is a natural hybrid of primitive technology in which Nyanza barbs reproduce naturally but under controlled and monitored conditions.Scaling down Oviponics farms from 10 Kg protein production units to 150 Kg production units and beyond will allow individuals to own vertical lakes at their homes, allowing them to produce omena protein cheaply and affordably. Women who are sexually abused by fishermen while fishing will be given the opportunity to own vertical lakes where they can produce their own omena fish protein because Oviponics technology uses less water, less space, and is less labour intensive.
