Muoi La (Vietnam) - 4D - BONDE
When considering upper-limb disabilities, most people immediately think of high-tech prosthetic arms. However, in many low and middle-income countries like Vietnam, such devices are often unsuitable: they are prohibitively expensive, heavy, and offer limited practical functionality, even eating. For users who face both economic and daily-living challenges, these prosthetics fail to meet real needs. The Versatile Joint System addresses this gap with an affordable, durable, and user-centred design tailored for everyday tasks.
Developed through an extensive co-design & human-centric process, it features a modular system built for real-world daily use. Its adjustable socket is lightweight, breathable, and skin-friendly, fitting diverse limb shapes. Interchangeable tools support essential activities: a precision gripper for eating and grooming, a large gripper for carrying items, a cooking tool for kitchen tasks, and a typing/navigation tool for digital access, restoring independence across multiple environments.
In 2025, the company delivered over one hundred prosthetic units across multiple provinces in Vietnam, supporting users with diverse disabilities including trauma-related limb loss and Hansen’s disease. We have formed partnerships with rehabilitation centres for fitting and co-development, expanded field testing, and built a community of early adopters who guide product iterations. The team also collaborates with disability-focused NGOs, government agencies, and international organisations, and has been featured on more than twenty national media outlets, raising strong public awareness of accessible assistive technologies.
