What is next for engineering and the global challenges?
Date: 28 February - 11 March 2022 (Live sessions on 3 and 4 March) | Hybrid event
This symposium was the first Frontiers event to be held in a hybrid format, and was open to previous participants, awardees and collaborators of the Frontiers programmes. The symposium celebrated World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development 2022, and explored the question of what is next for engineering and the global challenges? through three sub-themes:
- Human wellbeing
- Resilient systems
- Environmental sustainability
The goal of the symposia was to facilitate introductions and collaboration between outstanding researchers, innovators and practitioners working in the international development field. Participants looked back over the first five years of the Frontiers programmes to consider priority areas of focus for the future.
Between 28 February - 11 March delegates could network, collaborate and engage with content on-demand via the online platform, as well as attend mini-workshops exploring research in an international development context. The live sessions on 3 and 4 March were held at the Academy's home, Prince Philip House, in London, and joined by virtual delegates from around the world.
The event was part of the Academy's celebration of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development (4 March 2022).
Chairs for the event were Professor William Powrie FREng, University of Southampton, and Dr Jo Rose, University of York.
Outputs from the event are under development.
