About President's Medal
The Medal is awarded to an Academy Fellow who has contributed significantly to the Academy's aims and work through initiatives in promoting excellence in engineering.
For the President’s Medal, only Academy Fellows may submit nominations, and only Academy Fellows are eligible to be nominated.
The recipient of the President's Medal will be selected by the Royal Academy of Engineering's Awards Committee.
The Award consists of a medal and will normally be awarded annually. The Medal will not be awarded if in any year the Academy so decides.
Nomination Requirements
Details of the Nominee
- Provide full details of the Nominee, including their current position, contact information, and a brief overview of their career.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) of no more than two pages, focusing on the nominee's contributions relevant to this award. While emphasis on their work with the Academy and key career milestones is suggested, all relevant achievements can be included.
Citation
Citation of up to 500 words covering both the nominee's contributions to the Academy and their broader career achievements.
Contribution to Academy’s Aims
The citation should articulate how the nominee has advanced the Academy's aims and work. Examples might include:
- Leadership or participation in Academy initiatives, committees, or special projects, with significant responsibility for technical decisions or the application of excellent engineering practice.
- Contributions to the promotion of engineering excellence, education, or innovation in line with the Academy’s mission.
- Efforts to engage with or influence public policy or industry standards, or practices that support the Academy’s aims.
Career Achievements
The citation should highlight the nominee’s significant career accomplishments in engineering. Examples might include:
- Major innovations, discoveries, or advancements in engineering that have resulted in significant new products, processes, practices, or policy influence.
- Leadership roles that have driven significant impact within their organisation or the wider industry, supported by evidence of successful engineering achievements.
- Awards, honours, or recognitions that underscore the nominee's professional excellence and influence.
- Evidence of excellence in engineering education, training, or teaching, with transformational impact influencing national or international practices.
- Influential personal contributions to prominent committees, agencies, or organisations concerned with engineering policy or practice.
- Evidence of promoting engineering through outreach activities across various stakeholder groups, such as schools, colleges, government, media, and the wider public.
These examples are provided for guidance and are not intended to limit the scope of what can be included.
Letters of Support
Nominators must provide letters of support from two referees. To ensure an impartial perspective, at least one referee must be from outside of the Nominee's organisation. The Nominator cannot be a referee. Each reference should be:
- Evidence-based, with specific examples of the nominee's achievements and influence.
- Objective, providing an unbiased evaluation of the nominee's qualifications, work, and contributions to the area.
- Authored by an individual with relevant experience and a thorough understanding of the Nominee's work and field of expertise.
Additional Guidelines
- Self-nominations are not accepted. However, if you are interested in this award but do not know anyone who can nominate you, please contact the Academy for assistance.
- For the President’s Medal, only Academy Fellows may submit nominations, and only Academy Fellows are eligible to be nominated.
- Only completed nominations will be considered. Ensure that the nomination form is fully completed and includes the CV and letters of support at the time of submission.
- Each nominator may submit up to three nominations for the award in any one year.
- Submissions must be made via the Academy’s Grant Management System no later than 4pm on Tuesday 29 October 2024.
