Paul Matovu (Uganda) - Vertical and Micro Gardening (VMG)
VMG’s mission is to empower small urban landholders through its “farm-in-a-box” innovation, promoting sustainable agro-investment for food security, safety, and income generation.
The Vertical Farm (VF), VMG’s flagship product, is a stackable garden that allows urban households to grow up to 200 plants per cycle using organic methods. This enables lower-income households to achieve food security, whilst generating income from produce sales. On average, VMG users earn $355 annually. Multiple VF models are available, tailored to different customer needs and income levels, with a planned integration of AI into its Vertical Farming approach to further enhance efficiency.
VMG also provides agro-advisory services and technologies to enhance both on-farm and off-farm productivity, increasing production and marketable yields. Agricultural extension services are offered through consultancy or training. Additionally, VMG developed Gimusa Organic Gardening Soil, a key revenue stream that supports circular value chains by converting municipal waste into fertiliser through vermicomposting. VMG’s Vertical Farm serves as both a food source, and a micro-enterprise for generating income at home, creating a sustainable socioeconomic solution that addresses vulnerabilities in land-constrained communities.
