Professor Nick Jennings CB FREng FRS, Chair of the Engineering Policy Centre Committee at the Royal Academy of Engineering, commenting on the new AI white paper, said:
"Harnessing the power of AI to drive economic growth and to address major social needs requires the right frameworks for safe, fair and transparent use of AI systems. The Royal Academy of Engineering welcomes this white paper’s focus on 5 clear principles that cover the core requirements of well-governed use of AI – and which chime with messages from the National Engineering Policy Centre’s work on the safety and ethics of autonomous systems.
"The scale of AI’s impact is significant, reported in the paper as a £3.7Bn contribution to the UK’s economy. Given that economic contribution, and the important role of AI in addressing needs from healthcare to decarbonisation, it is essential that investment in AI regulation – including a regulatory sandbox – is proportionate to that potential value."
