About the scheme
This new programme, in partnership with Google DeepMind and the Hg Foundation, will provide artificial intelligence (AI) research placements at top UK universities for undergraduate students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, providing them with the tools and opportunities to progress into research and careers in AI.
What the scheme funds
The scheme will fund up to 120 paid AI research placements of six to eight weeks in summer 2025, hosted by 10 UK universities.

The programme will enable host universities to:
- gain research support and insights from the next generation of engineering talent
- develop inclusive leadership skills
- support development of a stronger, more diverse AI research community that can bring unique perspectives and solutions to the field.
Benefits for students
The programme will support eligible undergraduates to:
- improve their knowledge of the different areas of AI
- build their research expertise
- understand the routes into different AI careers
- build confidence in taking the next steps in their education or career journey in AI.
Applying to host a placement
- Applications are currently open for eligible UK universities to apply to host a research placement.
- Applications for students will follow in early 2025, with applications to be submitted directly to successful host universities.
