Bringing together perspectives from across the water industry, government, and public, this report considers the interventions available to reduce the public health risk to people using public waters for recreation that may be polluted with faecal organisms from human waste and highlights the priorities for change.

Professor Chris Whitty is Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for England, the UK government’s Chief Medical Adviser and head of the public health profession.

Professor David Butler FREng
Professor David Butler FREng FICE FCIWEM is Co-Director of the Centre for Water Systems and Professor of Water Engineering at the University of Exeter and chair of the project looking at wastewater and public health.

Dr Andrew Thompson
Dr Andrew Thompson FIChemE is a technical expert for wastewater treatment and Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineering.

Professor Barbara Evans
Professor Barbara Evans is Professor of Public Health Engineering at University of Leeds and leads a multi-disciplinary research group working on resilient water and waste services and public health.
