Industrial Fellowships 2024
Dr Muhammad Wakil Shahzad is a mechanical engineering researcher with over a decade of experience. His academic journey has been dedicated to understanding and improving water treatment processes. His research focusses particularly on developing innovative technologies for wastewater treatment and the mitigation of environmental contaminants.
Currently, Dr Shahzad’s research focuses on the application of novel hybrid processes for wastewater treatment. This cutting-edge approach leverages the thermodynamic synergy of multiple processes to overcome their individual limitations. By integrating these processes, he and his team aim to achieve efficient removal of pollutants common in industrial effluents. This hybrid technology not only meets the urgent need for effective wastewater treatment but also integrates renewable energy, providing a sustainable solution to two significant environmental challenges.
The aims of this Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellowship are to advance our understanding and implementation of sustainable wastewater treatment technologies and to promote their adoption in both urban and rural settings. Through collaborative efforts with Northumbria University and Northern Engineering Solutions, they are seeking to develop scalable and cost-effective treatment systems that can be implemented globally, especially in regions with limited resources. This project aligns with broader goals of fostering a sustainable society by improving water quality, reducing environmental impact and supporting the health and well-being of communities. Furthermore, by enhancing the inclusivity of the economy, they aim to create job opportunities in the green technology sector and empower local populations through education and participation in sustainable practices. The Fellowship thus serves as a catalyst for environmental stewardship and economic inclusivity, contributing to a more resilient and equitable future.
