Deval Karia
Deval Karia, co-Founder and CEO of Open MedLabs, is dedicated to developing affordable medical devices. His journey began with Insuflo, conceived during his M.Des. at IISc Bangalore, where he received the Institute Gold Medal. Transitioning from academia to entrepreneurship, Deval's work on Insuflo earned him the GYTI award (Gandhian Young Technological Innovation). His designs have also won the prestigious James Dyson Design Award and Lexus Design Award. For over six years, he has focused on developing and commercializing Insuflo, securing funding from agencies like Breakthrough-T1D and the Indian Government, building partnerships, and adapting to evolving market needs.
Open MedLabs has developed Insuflo, an affordable and accessible insulin pump designed to address the critical need for effective diabetes management, particularly in resource-constrained areas. While insulin pumps have been available for over two decades and offer significant benefits in blood sugar control and overall quality of life, their adoption remains low, largely due to their prohibitive costs - Insuflo helps to tackle this issue by being up to 70% cheaper than traditional methods, whilst also offering local language support, and a remote-control feature for discreet insulin delivery.
