Camilo Herrera
Camilo Jose Herrera Diaz is a social entrepreneur with more than 17 years of experience. In 2011, he founded Un Litro De Luz®, a company focused on bringing energy, light and internet to communities in extreme poverty and conflict zones through low cost solar energy. In 2015, he received the MIT TR 35 title, recognizing him as one of the most important innovators under 35 in Latin America. He has an Honorary Doctorate in Human Rights. Camilo is also an Ashoka Fellow, and is included in the list of the 500 most influential people in Latin America.
Litro de Luz tackles two main issues: lack of energy, that according to the UN affects 740 million people worldwide (equivalent to the entire population of Europe), and the absence of internet, which impacts 2.9 billion people (as stated by weforum.org). The lack of electricity and internet access are related to a new dimension of poverty, often referred to as digital poverty. Litro de Luz is a decentralised solar energy company that operates in rural areas, and conflict or post-conflict zones, in Latin America. It is the fastest, easiest, and cheapest way to bring public lighting, energy, and internet access to any community across the world.
