Arlene Joaquin
Arlene Joaquin has a master's degree in Agricultural Production Chain Management from Larenstein University, the Netherlands. Actively involved in the development of agricultural instrumentations, controls and machineries, she has served as a reviewer in reputable journals, and frequents various national and international R&D competitions. Recently being awarded both a Hall of Fame Award for 'Outstanding Employee', and a Juana Award in recognition of her achievements as a woman in engineering, she is currently leading a project aiming to enhance the local capability of the Philippines in the design, development and prototyping of agricultural machineries.
Her innovation, a handheld copra moisture metre, is based on the resistance measurement principle, identifying the most crucial moisture content levels of 6% to 18% required for copra and its by-products. It features a detachable two-rod prong electrode and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) read-out panel to facilitate a seamless user experience. The device can generate moisture content readings in as quick as five minutes, eliminating the long wait times associated with traditional processes.
