Dr Alessandra Serain

Dr Alessandra Serain is a pharmacist with a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from UNICAMP. After a short period at Mario Negri Institute (Milan/IT), she is now undertaking her Postgraduate Entrepreneurial Doctor Scholarship in Artificial and Computational Intelligence at the Laboratory of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, focusing on Precision Oncology.

Dr Serain has developed a test for prognostic stratification in patients with ovarian cancer that allows for personalized oncological treatment, increasing the chances of curing the most lethal gynecological malignancy. Her main innovation is the use of a predictor based on a panel of 11 miRNAs, developed through a machine learning methodology that calculates metrics associated with the patient's prognosis. Beyond the ease of integrating this test into the clinical routine and implementing it cost-effectively on a large scale, her innovation facilitates for more targeted and effective treatment models: minimising side effects, optimising therapy selection, and increasing the chances of success in cancer treatment.
