Dr Ainil Hawa Jasni (Malaysia) - Proxima Technologies
By transforming agricultural byproducts into bioplastic cellulose, Proxima Technologies are helping to solve the problem of waste management in agriculture. Instead of burning or discarding crop residue, waste materials can be upcycled into a valuable raw material used for fashion, reducing environmental pollution whilst giving agricultural communities an additional stream of revenue .
Traditional fashion materials like polyester and nylon are made from petroleum-based products, which contribute to climate change and do not biodegrade, creating long-lasting environmental waste. By contrast, Proxima Technologies' bioplastic cellulose is biodegradable, and incorporates latex for flexibility, ensuring that it performs well in applications where synthetic fabrics are currently used. By using waste as the raw material, this reduces the demand for virgin materials such as cotton or synthetic fibres, which require significant water, land, and energy resources to produce.
