Professor Derek McAuley’s career has been principally in industry, with key periods spent in academia. He has been widely influential both commercially and academically. Throughout his career he has worked to translate research into innovation, business value and real-world impact and to bring industry insight to shape research. His technology work has contributed to many areas of computer systems engineering, including optical networking, internet technologies, virtualization, operating systems and distributed systems. He has shaped key systems now in widespread use. This is complemented by socio-technical work, applying responsible innovation and user-centred design, while considering competition and other regulatory frameworks, to ensure such technologies promote an inclusive society.
