Professor Ricardo Martinez-Botas FREng
Professor of Turbomachinery, Imperial College London
Professor Ricardo Martinez-Botas is best known for outstanding work to improve performance of diesel and petrol engines, in particular his work on the turbines of turbochargers. The turbine receives an uneven flow from the engine exhaust and, until Professor Martinez-Botas's work, this unsteadiness had been neglected.
Professor Martinez-Botas and his team provided the theory for this flow and developed novel laboratory facilities to test turbines realistically. He also leads work on organic Rankine cycles and hybrid vehicles. International engine and turbocharger companies collaborate with him because of his unique capabilities, leading to ground-breaking improvements, technical papers, patents and industrial impact.
