Chief Operating Officer, Production, Transformation and Carbon, BP plc

Gordon Birrell was involved in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of oil and gas fields for 15 years before leading BP’s major Upstream businesses in Azerbaijan, Alaska, Canada and the North Sea. He led a global function comprising central engineering and health and safety.

He has been BP Regional President in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey since 2012, accountable for safe delivery of oil and gas around $20 billion worth of major projects.

He chaired the management committee and was director of the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) from 2013 to 2015, and is IOGP management committee sponsor for the standards committee and decommissioning committee. He implemented BP’s Upstream Operations response to investigations arising from the Deepwater Horizon incident.
