Dr Don Arnone pioneered active terahertz imaging and spectroscopy as an individual engineer and then co-founded TeraView to convert his laboratory technique into a commercial product. TeraView is arguably the leading terahertz analysis instrumentation company in the world, and has pioneered new applications such as fault detection in semiconductor chips when in a ‘system in a package’ (a number of integrated circuits enclosed in a single module), car paints and coatings in general.

A range of other applications in industrial process control have been developed and the spectroscopy instruments are playing a role in security and scientific research. The technology that he developed is also undergoing assessment as a diagnostic aid in cancer surgery.
