Dr Andrew Carter has spent his entire career working in the field of photonics. He was instrumental in developing III-V semiconductor-based components in the early days of LEDs, as well as the highly sophisticated monolithic integrated circuits that continue to drive optical physical layer performance gains, which underpin the growth of the World Wide Web.

In doing so, not only has Dr Carter led UK efforts to industrialise such components, as CTO of Marconi Optical Components, Bookham and Oclaro, he was also instrumental in forging the UK’s ability to tap into the multi-billion dollar photonic components market.
