Visiting Professor
Dr Karl Micallef is a chartered structural designer with extensive industrial experience. He holds MSc and PhD degrees from Imperial College and an integrated Bachelor of Engineering and Architecture degree from the University of Malta. He is currently an Associate Principal Structural Engineer and part of the Leadership Group at SOM. He was part of the design team that won the IStructE 2022 Structural Award for the innovative sustainable design of the UN new HQ in Geneva. Formerly at Foster+Partners, he was involved in several high-profile projects such as the new Apple Campus in California, USA. Other project contributions during his career include Nine Elms Square (London), Maggie’s Centre (Manchester) and Karla Tower (Gothenburg). With a blend of experience in “architecture” and “engineering”, the VP appointment will enable Karl to deliver "the best of both worlds" vision to UEL students. He will help them gain skills and preparedness for the working world. Guiding and inspiring students on sustainable design will make better future designers and get them excited to be part of the engineering profession.
