Hitachi Rail is a global player in the railway sector: an integrated group capable of offering rail transport vehicles, signalling systems and digital technology, service & maintenance activities as well as turnkey solutions worldwide.
ILP graduates from Hitachi trained their senior leadership community on inclusive leadership to create a culture of inclusion that is lived and role-modelled at the top of their business. This was achieved by delivering four 90-minute training sessions that combined learning with group activity and action planning. Topics included allyship in action, psychological safety, intersectionality and privilege, positive action vs. discrimination, and inclusive language.

The Hitachi team included:
- Ben Watt, Mid-career leader (Project Lead)
- Julian Perkins, Early-career leader
- Jo Pennell, HR Leader
- David Palmer, Senior-career leader

Ben Watt, Programme Director, Mid-career Leader (Project Lead)
"A highlight of my time on the ILP was delivering an impactful programme within my organisation that has created lasting change.
As an inclusive leader, I aim to be consistent around behaviours and hold others to account."
I’d like to see the deconstruction of alpha culture within the engineering industry to enable a more inclusive environment, and for engineers to be proactive about inclusion
Julian Perkins, Mechanical Design Engineer, Early-career Leader
During my time on the ILP, I am particularly proud of working collectively with a team from different areas of the business with a passion for making meaningful impact to company culture.
In the future, I would like the engineering industry to change the perception of who is an engineer and what an engineer does. As engineers, we should design and problem solve with everyone in mind.

Jo Pennell, Strategic HR Business Manager, HR Leader
"A highlight of my time on the ILP is the bond I built with my team to ensure our project was successful.
In my workplace I show up as an inclusive leader by being open to learning, treating people how I would like to be treated, and being an ally."
