What can we learn from the Academy’s network of visionary business leaders?
The Royal Academy of Engineering has recently embarked on developing a new network of CTOs and other technical science and engineering business leaders. The new Academy-led Engineering and Technology Business Leaders’ (ETBL) Forum aims to provide a new platform for members to learn from each other’s experiences in business and represents a unique opportunity for industry leaders to inform the Academy’s Research and Innovation policy work. The primary distinguishing feature of the ETBL Forum will be its focus on engineering and technology businesses and to understand research and innovation challenges from the perspective of CTOs and technical leaders tasked with delivering innovation for their companies’ technologies, products and processes.

Included among the Academy’s network of engineering and technology experts is an extensive group of experienced CTOs, technical business leaders and innovators. These individuals have a wealth of insight and expertise in R&D across a range of technologies, industries and sectors. Bringing together these individuals in an open forum will foster cross-sectoral knowledge sharing and collaboration, benefiting leaders from both small and large organisations by learning from each other’s ideas and practice.
Forum Aims
The Forum aims to create an open and collaborative space where industry-based technical leaders and individuals who are responsible for their company’s technological innovation and R&D can convene for the discussion of innovation related challenges and opportunities.
- To create an executive networking space for a diverse group of cross-sectoral technical business leaders to share, collaborate and connect.
- To provide an opportunity for technical business leaders to offer insights for the Academy’s Research and Innovation policy work on a range of relevant engineering and technology related subject areas.
ETBL Forum Events
The ETBL Forum was launched on Friday 07 March 2025 with an inaugural event focused on understanding industry’s views and priorities for the government’s forthcoming Industrial Strategy, Invest 2035. The event represented an opportune moment to understand what UK engineering and technology business leaders consider to be the most important areas of focus for the Industrial Strategy with respect to both its design and future implementation.
