The Royal Academy of Engineering has welcomed the publication of the government’s new International Technology Strategy, which aims to guide the UK to becoming a tech superpower by 2030.
Dr Hayaatun Sillem CBE, CEO of the Royal Academy of Engineering, says:
“It is great to see the government’s laser-like focus on engineering innovation and technology at the moment – for too long innovation policy has been seen simply as an offshoot of research policy, but fostering innovation and enterprise based on our world-renowned research base requires specific support and a systemic approach in partnership with business and industry.
“The UK is a small country – California is nearly twice our size geographically. But we punch far above our weight in innovation through our world-class universities, public sector research establishments, corporate R&D centres, science and industrial parks, advanced manufacturing capabilities and of course our vibrant startups and scaleups. By working together we have a real opportunity to create the industries and jobs of the future that will also be of benefit to society.
“I am also happy to see an acknowledgement that UK engineering and technology have an important role to play through international partnerships to address our most pressing global challenges – particularly challenges that are felt most acutely in low and middle income countries.”
