Commenting on today’s publication of Building a safer future, the final report of the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, Dr Hayaatun Sillem, CEO of the Royal Academy of Engineering, says:
“We welcome today’s report by Dame Judith Hackitt DBE FREng, and the whole systems approach that her review has taken to building safety. This approach is essential to ensure that all elements of the system, from the people who design the building, to regulations, oversight and maintenance, work together to ensure that buildings are as safe as possible for people to live in. It is now vital that changes in culture and practice are delivered on the ground in the building sector. Dame Judith’s recommendations should drive this change, and the engineering profession stands ready to work with government and other professions to deliver this in practice.
“The Academy also recognises the responsibility of the entire engineering profession to learn lessons from tragic events like the Grenfell fire. We must not only share best practice right across the profession but also ensure it is acted on consistently in future.”
Last year a cross-engineering sector response to the review’s call for evidence was co-ordinated by the Royal Academy of Engineering on behalf of 'Engineering the Future', an alliance of the 38 professional engineering bodies in the UK. This work was submitted to Dame Judith’s review and is available to read here.
