Programme overview
This is Engineering: Scotland is an engineering education programme established by the Royal Academy of Engineering. It delivers STEM education support for students and teachers, and provides opportunities and career guidance beyond the classroom.
The programme has an integral role in transforming local communities by raising young people's aspirations and improving social mobility opportunities in rural and inter-city areas of high socio-economic deprivation. It also encourages increased participation from female students and underrepresented groups.
What we offer
Working collaboratively with 50 primary and secondary schools, further education colleges, universities and local employers, our programme aims to inspire and encourage young learners to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects into post-16 education, enabling them to access engineering career pathways.
Our programme enriches the curriculum, enhances pupil engagement, and develops essential transferable skills by bringing real-world engineering practice into the classroom.
Our goal is for engineering skills to meet the 21st-century global challenges and for engineers and technicians to reflect the diversity of the society they serve.
A further (and principal) aim of the project is to encourage women and underrepresented groups to progress towards professional engineering roles.
TIE: Scotland provides support for schools, including:
- A local lead school coordinator who facilitates termly network meetings and fosters collaborative partnerships between teachers, careers leads, and support staff with local employers and industry.
- Continual professional development on the latest STEM pedagogies, plus teacher training and free environment and climate-focused engineering-themed STEM resources to enhance and add context to the curriculum.
- An in-house grant scheme for schools to develop a library of resources and experiences for students, enhancing the ‘E’ in STEM.
- Greater employer engagement opportunities, leading to improved perceptions of engineering careers and improved knowledge of pathways to engineering careers for both students and teachers.
