Chemring Industrial Secondment

This round is now closed. The following text is for information purposes only.

An opportunity is available for an outstanding engineering academic to work on the Chemring-funded secondment (1434KB)Adobe PDF document icon image project Powder Processing and Handling - Review and Improvements.

The Secondment

The secondment will aim to review the way in which powders and granulated compositions are processed and handled and to propose and implement improvements in these areas.

  • The project will cover handling of ingredient powders, and mixed/granulated compositions used in three pyrotechnic product lines.

  • The processes to be reviewed may include handling and dispensing of raw material powders, in addition to sieving, drying and handling of mixed composition.

  • The objective will be to deliver a common improvement solution across the three lines.

  • Achievement and maintenance of the correct granule size will be the immediate measure of the success of the project.

  • Minimisation of final product performance variation will be used to indicate the ultimate level of success.

  • The project may have a link in to planned automation of some of the processing operations.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Engineering academic members of staff of UK universities teaching relevant aspects of engineering are eligible to apply.

  • The scheme is particularly beneficial to engineering academics with minimal or no experience of industry or to those whose last experience of industry was some time ago or in another field.

  • There are no age restrictions, but applicants will need to convince The Academy that the secondment will have a significant impact on their teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

  • Due to the nature of the secondment work, applications are accepted from UK nationals only.

Duration of Secondment

The secondment may be for a period of six months on a full-time basis or for 12 months on a part-time basis.

Funding

Funding will be provided to the university to enable the university to employ a temporary replacement for the secondee. The secondee’s travel and subsistence (and/or accommodation) expenses (of up to £4,500) will also be met.

Dissemination of knowledge

Recipients of the Chemring Industrial Secondment award are responsible for ensuring that the knowledge and skills acquired are appropriately disseminated and applied once the secondment has ended.

A report (41KB)Adobe PDF document icon image on the secondment is to be submitted to The Royal Academy of Engineering within one month of the secondment’s completion. It is also a requirement that a brief (one to two A4 pages-long) End-of-Year report (43KB)Adobe PDF document icon image on the secondment is submitted to The Academy one year after the completion of the secondment. The Host company is also required to fill in a Company Report form (48KB)Adobe PDF document icon image and a Third Party Income form (47KB)Adobe PDF document icon image within one month from the end of the secondment. The host and secondee reports are sent to Academy Fellows in the scheme’s Steering Group for evaluation and feedback.

The secondee and his/her line manager are visited at the host organization by the scheme manager to monitor progress.
