UK-China Energy Storage Report
The Royal Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have published a joint report summarising recent technical and policy developments in the field of energy storage in both the UK and China.
Based on a series of workshops held by the two Academies, it makes policy recommendations for both the UK and Chinese Governments, including the need to: develop more robust systems for analysis and modelling; accelerate the deployment of energy storage technology; identify funding pathways and governance models for energy storage systems, and outline potential future joint co-operation in this field.
Led by a group co-chaired by Royal Academy of Engineering Fellow Professor Richard Williams OBE FREng and Chinese Academy Vice President Professor Li Jinghai FREng, the Academies have been exploring the science, engineering and policy requirements for developing and implementing energy storage technology.
There is an urgent need to find ways to address the problems caused by the intermittency of renewable power generation, in order to enable national infrastructure to deal with both an unstable power supply and unexpected demand in electricity with greater resilience.
Professor Williams said: "Our findings point to the urgent need for deployment of energy storage as a critical component of delivering energy in UK and China. There are real opportunities and benefits to be gained through future collaborations between the UK and China in addressing some of these common needs. Storage is not an option but a necessity."
Professor Li said: "The UK and China face many of the same energy issues, albeit on a different scale. The workshops and discussions have brought together the energy storage communities in both countries and acted as a strong catalyst for change."
