Inside this issue
Manager's Desk
After a break of a year welcome back to our newsletter. In the coming issues we will be publishing our usual digest of awards and reports in addition to clearer guidance to those intending to apply to the scheme.
2009 started with a staff change to the team; Kenneth Ng has replaced Pauline Stillman as the scheme administrator. Fortunately we have not lost Pauline's services all together as she moved onto other responsibilities with the Academy. In future all correspondence and additional information should be directed to Kenneth at kenneth...@...org.uk
Given the turbulent economic times which we find ourselves in, I am pleased to report that the Academy will be operating a full and comprehensive travel grant scheme in 2009 and 2010. However the Academy will be looking to applicants to maximize their visits to the full potential by combining activities, in addition to ensuring that the costs claimed for travel and incidental expenses are the most cost effective. Travelling half way round the world to spend three days at one conference does not rate as an efficient or effective use of funds. In addition it is worth reminding potential applicants that the Academy awards travel grants on the basis of approved costs and not those necessarily stated by them in their submission. In the internet-based world, verifying travel costs and conference fees can be done by the stroke of a few keys and the use of a reliable search engine. And trying to convince us that a budget of £50 per day for food in the USA is the going rate as someone did recently is a non starter!
In regard to award payments, we will continue the practice of paying by cheque, but will be extending the option of payment by BACS as from 1 May 2009, so if you prefer payment by this method, please let us know.
It is also our intention to review the scheme eligibility criteria. One particular requirement that has been mooted on several occasions is the requirement to have membership at any grade of a professional engineering institution; another has focused on the wider dissemination of reports that are submitted to us. Should we make any changes, they will not become effective until 2010.
As always any constructive feedback is welcome particularly on enhancing the technology-transfer potential of the newsletter so please do not hesitate to contact me.
