Dr Andrew Lynn is a materials engineer, inventor and entrepreneur. He has founded four engineering companies based around his innovations, and brought several technologies to market, including a regenerative medical implant for cartilage and bone repair.

Graph deep learning models have been successfully applied to a broad range of fields, from particle physics to drug development and the detection of ‘fake news’.

Esther Rodriguez-Villegas has created wearable devices for the diagnosis and management of respiratory conditions using pioneering low-power integrated circuit design. Her ultra-low power circuits have also been used in miniature brain monitoring systems to improve the welfare of animals in medical research.

Jamie Shotton was the leading engineer behind the machine learning that drives the human body motion capture system in Microsoft’s Kinect, which won the Royal Academy of Engineering’s MacRobert Award in 2011.

Dr Daniel Elford is Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Sonobex Ltd, a company that is developing acoustic metamaterials to address noise pollution problems. He was awarded an Academy Enterprise Fellowship in 2012, and has raised over £1.2 million in funding for his innovation. He became an Academy Enterprise Hub SME Leader in 2018.

Jennifer Griffiths’ innovation, Snap Tech, works with retailers, social media and publishers to help customers quickly find and compare fashion items online. Retailers can use Snap Tech’s ‘Snap Similar’ button to show customers clothes that match the colour or cut of others they have browsed. Publishers can make use of ‘Snap the Look’ to tell readers where to find a whole outfit from a single photo, along with where to find similar outfits.

Professor Newman, BP Professor of Information Engineering, University of Oxford has been writing autonomous vehicle algorithms for 20 years. Since 1999 he has worked on the core ideas that underpin autonomous vehicles worldwide. His work has been fundamental in enabling the operation of the autonomous sub-sea vehicles that dealt with the Deepwater Horizon oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dr Jade Algalve has been awarded the Silver Medal for her fundamental work in concurrency, which is widely regarded as one of the most complicated areas of computer science. Her work is conceptually innovative and breathes new life into modelling the behaviour of computer hardware and software.

Dr Iain Scott has been awarded the Silver Medal for for his leadership and vision to create Leonardo MW's Vixen-E family of active electronically scanned array airborne radar products, which are now a major UK export success worth hundreds of millions of pounds.

Professor Chris Sutcliffe has been awarded the Silver Medal for his work and inventions within manufacturing/3D Printing over the past 20 years. Which led to the development of the Tritanium implant technology produced by laser and electron beam powder-bed fusion.

Billy Boyle has been awarded the Silver Medal for his pioneering invention of a programmable ‘breathalyser’ for disease. Billy and his team are pioneering the field of breath biomarkers, demonstrating how lives can be saved, patient outcomes improved and treatment costs reduced.

Two UK engineers, Rob Bishop and Dr Zehan Wang, who developed a machine learning technology now used by Twitter to help deliver high-quality media to millions of users worldwide received a Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal in recognition of their work. Rob and Zehan founded Magic Pony Technology in 2014, working together to develop a system that uses machine learning to enable more efficient delivery of images and videos on mobile devices.

Professor Constantin Coussios has been awarded the Silver Medal for his work including a ground-breaking method of preserving functioning organs at body temperature.

Dr David Silver has been awarded the Silver Medal for his work on reinforcement learning, leading a team to develop AlphaGo. One of the key engineering brains behind the phenomenally successful artificial intelligence company DeepMind. Dr David Silver, Principal Research Scientist at DeepMind, has changed the face of adaptive control through his ground-breaking research.

Dr Damian Gardiner is taking the world of product authentication by storm, with his Cambridge University start-up company ilumink Limited acquired by Johnson Matthey’s Process Technologies Division in 2015. They were keen to adopt his unique method of printing ‘liquid crystal’ material onto any surface using an ink-jet printer. This method is secure, economical and ideal for security-tagging products, from cosmetics and perfumes to drugs and banknotes.

Dr Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of Google’s DeepMind subsidiary, is recognised for his pioneering work in artificial intelligence following a number of breakthroughs for DeepMind, which was founded in 2010 and acquired by Google in 2014. Notably, the organisation’s AlphaGo project this year successfully beat the world’s number one Go player, in a contest in Seoul, watched online by 280 million viewers, and long seen as a grand challenge of AI research.

Professor Tong Sun is an international leader in the use of optical fibre sensors to monitor sensitive equipment, particularly in extreme conditions. Currently Director of the Photonics and Instrumentation Research Centre at City University London, she was the first female Professor to be appointed at the university’s School of Engineering (as it then was) in its 100-year history.

Dr Susannah Clarke is Founder and Director of Embody Orthopaedic, a spinout from Imperial College London, which is pioneering a new type of 3D printed technology to revolutionise joint replacements. Susannah came up with the idea of using a 3D printer to make fully customisable surgical instruments at the click of a button when she was completing a PhD in orthopaedics at Imperial College London and studying the ways that hip implants fail due to being poorly positioned in patients.

Dr Don Syme is a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research, Cambridge, where he works to improve the tools available to programmers worldwide, helping them create the building blocks of the virtual world more effectively. Don joined Microsoft Research in the late 1990s, and has since achieved repeated success in bringing improvements in programming languages to millions of developers.

Dr Andy Ward is the inventor of an indoor location system now making car factories smart.Inspired by the different uses that RADAR was put to after World War II and the unreliability of GPS indoors, Andy was an early proponent of ultra wide band (UWB) radio for accurate in-building positioning. Andy co-founded Ubisense, a location intelligence provider, in 2002 to develop a solution that could track individual items in a factory and automate the processes between them.
